In March this year the Government at last announced that training for
Care Home staff was to become compulsory. Norman lamb, the Minister
of State for Care and Support said the lack of basic requirements for training
care workers is leaving frail pensioners in the hands of staff who have “no
idea what they are doing”. The subsequent Cavendish
Review formalised the requirements and these have been set down by
the Department for Health.
These set minimum standards for;
1.
The roles of the Healthcare Support Worker and
Adult Social Care Worker
2.
Your personal development
3.
Effective communication
4.
Equality, diversity and inclusion
5.
Duty of care
6.
Safeguarding
7.
Person-centred care and support
8.
Health and safety
9.
Handling information
1. Infection
prevention and control
Whilst at the moment there is no legal obligation for an
employer to train their staff beyond the statutory requirements (Health and
Safety, Food Hygiene, Manual or People Handling, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults
or Safeguarding Children, Infection Control and Basic Life Support), but in an
industry that has frequently been in the national press recently (more often than not for
the wrong reasons) going beyond the legal minimum, before it becomes a legal
obligation, will make a care home stand out from the crowd, and it is quite
likely that it will in the long term save the home a lot of money.
Once minimum training requirements become a legal
requirement, training providers are likely to demand higher fees and time
obligations on staff will increase with the clamour to meet the
standards.
At Cyfal Training Services we are able to offer competitive
training packages tailored to the care home's requirements.
We pride ourselves on the quality and the integrity
of our training. If you would like to discuss your requirements with us, or
review your existing training regime in the light of the legal proposals,
please feel free to contact us.
